CHRISTIANITY IN JAPAN
Japan, with its population of about 127 million people, is a global leader in technology and business. While the country is often associated with its traditional religions—Buddhism and Shintoism—many don’t realize that these are more cultural customs than deeply practiced faiths. In almost every city, you’ll find Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, but the average Japanese person often doesn’t actively follow these beliefs. Instead, these visits are often part of cultural tradition rather than a reflection of personal faith. In reality, many Japanese identify more as atheists than as adherents of Buddhism or Shintoism, creating unique challenges for Christian churches in Japan.
Despite Japan’s rich cultural history, there is a significant stigma surrounding religion. This is largely due to events like the 1995 sarin gas attack by a religious cult, which caused widespread harm and reinforced a deep-rooted phobia toward religion or anything associated with “god.” Because of this, Christian churches in Japan face an uphill battle in changing perceptions.
At Japan Kingdom Church, we are dedicated to making a difference in Japan by demonstrating God’s love through action. We believe that, as 1 John 4:18 says, “perfect love casts out fear,” and this truth guides our mission. Our goal is to show the people of Japan that Christianity is not about imposing religion, but about transforming lives through God’s unconditional love.
Japan Kingdom Church stands among the growing number of Christian churches in Japan that are making a tangible impact. We aim to reach everyone—from the homeless and downcast to families, single mothers, and business professionals—showing that the love of Christ is relevant to all aspects of life. Our focus is to break down the walls of fear and skepticism by being a supportive and compassionate presence in the community.
By being one of the few Christian churches in Japan actively involved in hands-on outreach, Japan Kingdom Church seeks to be a beacon of hope in a society where faith is often misunderstood. We invite all who are searching for love, peace, and purpose to join us as we live out the Gospel in the heart of Japan.
